Day 27

The December streak holds strong. Lots of treadmill time has been actually kind of nice. Getting caught up on movies! The only difficult part about this streak has been finding time. A few late nights but motivation has been high so despite lack of sleep I get it done. Only a few days left. 30 minutes minimum each day.

Adversity and choosing when to run


The past week has been a rough one. Some illness is hanging on and won't let go. Seems to be a stomach thing as I've lost my appetite, very weak, have random bouts of stomach cramps, and had a fun night and following morning of diarrhea. Seems like norovirus. Add that to kids keeping me up at night and I'm fairly wrecked. Coffee isn't even appealing! 


Most runs feel ok though and the motivation is high to chug out 30 minutes minimum since I've ran the past 20 days. Physically running-wise I feel fine. Overall I feel out of it. This next week I'll run a bit less since the Chariot will be out of use with my daughter home. No big deal. The goal is minimum 30 minutes a day. 

I know I bitch a lot about not running in the morning and I'd guess people wonder what my wife is doing, why can't she watch the kids? Well that is my decision. Being a stay at home dad I see it as my job to be there for my kids when needed. Whether that's up a few times at night like last night or up at 5am everyday sacrificing my mornings. 

Also running is a very selfish activity. I will fit it into my schedule and use my personal time which currently happens to be at night. Yeah, I don't prefer it, but it's what I've got now and even if I complain I adapt. Besides no one can complain about my running if I'm using MY time can they? 


From an ultra training standpoint I'd assume having an odd schedule, lack of sleep, and recently pushing through sickness I'm adapting to all sorts of things making my mind stronger. Adaptability and perseverance to obtain a goal seems to be key components of racing ultra distances. 

So five days left of Advent Running and eleven left to run all of December. I won't let the shits stop me.

Day 13 I stumbled. Lack of sleep and busy days built up but I recovered and went forth with 30 minutes to hold the streak. The wife seems to have forgotten that I'm running every day this month. I guess I misspoke in my last post that she is understanding the importance. 



Feeling down a bit but will hopefully snap out of it with a good run on the Wyre Forest later today. I feel mediocre in everything and want to be better, but that takes time and patience. I need to realize that. Take it one day at a time.

Ten days streaking are done. Minimum of 30 minutes. I'm feeling great. Motivated. Having fun.

I've actually been using the treadmill a fair amount and enjoying it. It's an easy way to run worry free at night. I've been watching YouTube videos of Arrowhead 135, Rovaniemi 150, and a bunch of other similar stuff. I'm considering hooking up our old tv! Could be a bit overkill though. 

I hate running at night outside and it's been my only option 5 days of the week for a year now. I've been saying it for months now but hopefully the little guy will shift soon!

I think it's all going smoothly, despite still being forced to run at night, because my wife has realized the importance of running to me and the effect (sp?) it has.

Well it's December 1st. It's time to run if I intend to streak the month. Not sure how motivated I am in all reality. I need to try though. Went through a pretty good bout of depression a couple weeks ago which is probably a good indicator that I need to run. 

I've begun to hate the holidays and the winter. The stress involved seems to erupt all at once and the trade off of supposed fun is minimal. Planning ahead solves all though in reality so I have no excuse. Every weekend is something going on with the wife's friends which is alright but I have to work which requires me to try to get days off or leave early which is difficult in the retail world adding more stress.

Still not running in the morning which has been almost a year now I'd guess. You'd think I'd adjust, but no. Some days I think if it's all worth it even?

Right now I have the opportunity to take my daughter out in the Chariot but she's changed her mind and wants to go with mummy despite mummy leaving already. So I guess it will be a night run. 

This girl gets so upset when I leave for JKD on Mondays yet when she has my full attention doesn't want it. It upsets me seeing her on Mondays so much I've not gone the past two and am considering only going Thursday's now. After this morning maybe I'll reconsider. 

Anyway. On with the day.

Fall is here



This morning the two pumpkins we carved appeared to have a dusting of snow on them. It turned out to be mold from the beginning of their demise. Oh I miss winter. Here it seems November arrives and it gets colder, the leaves all are gone, and I anticipate snow. But, it never comes. Perpetual November until spring arrives. I keep my eyes out for cheap used skis to have just in case. With the large grassy park nearby it is possible to ski if we happen to get a dusting of snow.



Speaking of skiing I'm also considering a pair of roller skis with pneumatic tires. I easily could use these at the Wyre Forest, but the cost/time analysis puts me off. They are expensive, I'd need boots too, and I make really good use of my Wyre Forest time now by running. Not to mention if I want to use the Chariot I'd need to get the trekking or Nordic ski package in order to pull it with a kid. I've got an eBay search out there but it's not a priority right now. Sure would give me that ski "fix" though! 



Everyone has been sick the past few weeks. I think I've got it the least for now but it's still annoying. I just shut up and deal with it. It hasn't been messing with my training at all other missing a few JKD sessions due to kids with high temperatures.



Speaking of JKD I skipped my most recent test. October had been a crazy month (hence no blog posts!) and I just couldn't pull it together. I knew everything but just needed to finalise one thing. My brain was fried and I gave up. I was disappointed in myself. My time management had been so good but has been falling and did. Gradings are super fun and I would've had to Thai box spar against a very experienced guy, which although very intimidating, I would've learned a lot in those few minutes. 



In a way missing the test has been a motivator much like entering a running race unprepared. So now I've instilled a basic plan of 20 or more minutes per day of JKD at home. I've also included a basic calisthenics program, something that has slipped as well. I need to set the habit to start small and when the habit has formed grow from there as time allows. 



Running has been good. No pressure. I'm looking at a 25 - 30 mile per week goal right now which is easy to do but should maintain my fitness without burning me out. I'm on the Wyre Forest twice per week with the little dude in the Chariot doing 7 - 10 miles (usually 10) which is as always a super fun run. It's getting muddy and wet but that's part of the fun. The majority of the photos are from these runs, definitely autumn. The other runs are unfortunately at night. I hate night running. Drunks. People heckling me. Almost getting hit by cars. Poor light for photos. End of the day motivation. Just no fun. Still awaiting the little dude to sleep in consistently, as of now we're back to 5-530am.  



I'm hoping to streak December again, running every day. I'm not sure to what extent though. A couple motivational running websites have different plans: 30 minutes minimum (Advent Running) or 20 minutes/3 miles (the Marcothon). The streak running association says minimum one mile. In years past I've done the 20 minutes/3 miles. 30 minutes could be a stretch but it is just a month. I've still got time to decide. 



Once December is over I have 24 weeks until my "A" race, South Downs Way 100. As I've mentioned before I've got a decent line up of races leading up to it but now may be adding one more. A week after the Worcester Marathon I may have an opportunity to run the Brighton Marathon for a charity the wife is involved with. I'd have to raise money, which I hate doing, but it's a super fast flat course as long as it isn't windy. This is still up in the air but it would be fun to see how fast I can go at the marathon distance.



Either way even if I only do the Worcester Marathon I'd be looking to PR despite it being a hilly course. I've never focused solely on a marathon for a PR. All I need to do is focus two days per week of my training on marathon specificity and it should happen.  The mileage needed for an ultra will already be there, just need some threshold work to be able to go faster at the 26.2 distance. 

In other race thoughts it looks like if a trip to the the US happens in July I've got a few options for adding another ultra to the summer. That is if all injuries and motivation play nice! I could be burnt out or in need of rest however it could be good just to race for fun? One race in particular looks cool; Voyageur 50. The Upper Midwest Trail Runners website of July races shows a few options of varying distances. Voyageur 50 happens to be the Saturday before a party I need to be at so the timing could be just right. One fun thing is that you're allowed a crew throughout the race which is uncommon for a 50 miler. Not that I need a crew but if family want to watch it's a bit more spectator friendly.

That's about it for now. Other thoughts running through my mind, I turn forty in 2017 which is pretty crazy. Maybe Rovaniemi 150 could be an option?

Thoughts on Snowdonia 50

As soon as I can I start taking notes on my races. Usually just scrawled on paper as a heads up for next time to make everything go smoother. 

Here's my list cut and paste with additional thoughts added:

"Pre race - know distances and approx time between checkpoints. Look at the map/course. Have an idea at least!"

I didn't do this at all. I had in the past for all the other races I'd done. I don't know why but in general I wasn't prepared. I didn't even look at the map pre-race! I had looked at the previous year's winning times and splits but it would've been nice to have the times and distances with me as I was totally in the dark. For instance the last leg I thought was around 6 miles, I asked the checkpoint worker and she said 8 miles! I think it was 8km. Mentally this could have lost me the race. I think it was my overall lack of confidence in my training led me to a lazy "completer vs competer" approach.

"Music no matter what. It weighs nothing"

I opted to not bring my iPod shuffle at the last minute because I figured I'd be running with people the whole time. Dumb. It is tiny and weighs nothing. Searing metal in my ears for the last couple segments would've helped, the science shows music reduces pain.

"MAP worked really well"

Master Amino Pattern helped greatly at Superior and I feel it did here too. I didn't take it for Lakeland and I felt like shit. Coincidence? Maybe, training wasn't on for LL too, but placebo is a powerful thing whether it works or not. In my lead up to Superior training was crushing me so I started with MAP and it sure seemed to help. 

"More body glide - arm chafed a bit"

A minor problem that I noticed post race. My huge stick of BodyGlide ran out so I've got a little one now which means less coverage per swipe. Could've been a big problem though as it's best to prevent than try to cover up a sore later on in a race. 

"Phone charging option, spare battery? Assume there are no outlets"

Most UK races require you to carry a fully charged phone. I've carried a race specific spare in the past but decided to bring my normal phone this time as it's lighter. Service was poor and with normal use for texting and taking photos the battery drained quickly. Sure I could sit in my car or in the school at an outlet but it would've been nice to have an in-tent charge option. I may use the gift certificate I won at the race to buy something like this.

"You are car camping, think comfort: bigger tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag was too hot, pillow, big piss bottle, sleeping bag liner?"

When I go to these events I usually camp as it's free. All my stuff is ultralight gear from when I was a Park Ranger. It works fine but these items of comfort could be upgraded and used for taking the family camping too. I've already gotten a cotton sleeping bag liner off eBay for a few pounds. Going to get a good size wide mouth Nalgene to use as a piss bottle too. Trucking back and forth to the bathroom all night in the rain is no fun. I used a spare water bottle I had with but had to dump it outside my door after every use. 

"Solid food early was good, settled stomach throughout, Reese's Fast Break was good to have in pack."

I learned this at Superior after having a couple quesadillas late in the race. I'm ok with solid food and have yet to get sick. Gels are great for on the go but solid food doesn't rot my stomach. Candy bars are comforting and taste good on the go too. Nothing beats melon though!

"Carried excessive water, consider weather/temp. Maybe soft bottles?"

I carried two full 21oz bottles in my race vest. I have no issues with sloshing or bruising but considering I mainly only drank one in between checkpoints I could've planned ahead and carried less. I have two Ultimate Direction soft bottles but as of now I prefer the wide mouth Specialized Purist bottles. Easy fill is the main reason why. Soft bottles are much more compact but have a small opening and hold less water. May have been perfect for this race? Once again planning ahead looking at distance and time between checkpoints  would've helped; oh, and weather too.

"Is there a more effective way to carry a map?"

This is the fourth race I've needed to have a map at the ready. Carrying it in one hand really is no big deal but it would be nice to tuck it away within easy reach. I did stuff it behind a water bottle which worked ok, it was a tight fit and sometimes worked it's way out. This could work better with a soft bottle which would allow more room in the bottle pocket. I also would slide it between by race vest shoulder strap and my body but this did allow sweat to escape and was sometimes uncomfortable. Soft bottle seems the best option. 

"Can anything in your kit be lighter?
Buff instead of hat
Strip first aid kit
Whistle on race vest"

This could take some research but after seeing how little the guy I ran with had (despite me thinking he wasn't carrying the required kit) it peaked my interest to see what I could do. Base layers seem to be the bulkiest item so I'm in the process of finding some options. The search continues......

"Shoes drained and dried well, no need for extra socks. No blisters."

I've always finished with at least one minor blister that during the event I didn't notice. At Snowdonia I used a pair of Brooks PureGrit 3 and DryMax Trail Running (1/4 crew high) socks that were brand new. I carried a spare pair of socks due to the weather and terrain which was unnecessary. Despite being fully submerged within an hour of the start the shoes drained and everything breathed and dried very well. All day we were in and out of moorland, running through streams, puddles, and with on and off rain I never worried about my feet pertaining to hotspots and blisters! 

"Feet became sore towards the end. Possibly needed more longer runs, more time on feet."

In other feet news the soles did become sore. Maybe because of my lack of long long runs? I did have an old bruise that became noticeable too after a while. I've looked into ways to strengthen my feet. I could get more cushioned shoes like Hokas but don't really want to go that route, I've got a system that works right now. Overall not too concerned but something to consider in the future. 

"Bring camera, phone could be dead"

The morning after the race I went for a hike to see the town a bit and explore some trails. My phone pretty much was dead so my capacity to take photos was minimized. I should've had my camera, it's as simple as that.

Snowdonia 50 Report

A few Thursdays ago I began packing my bags for a weekend in North Wales, a place I'd never been despite living so close. I'd be camping at a primary school in Betws y Coed, the race headquarters for the Snowdonia 50 (Eryri 50 in Welsh).

I packed up the basic car camping essentials and all the race kit I required and needed to compete. I planned for everything being closed and had food packed as well since last year at Lakeland 100 I didn't have time to eat or access a decent grocery store. I'd preferred to avoid that situation.  

I wasn't sure what to expect other than a very beautiful little corner of the world.

The drive was of course phenomenal as expected, the terrain slowly becoming more and more rugged the closer I got to Betws y Coed. It took about 3 hours and was easy and relaxed other than a bit of rush hour traffic near the England Wales border. 

The mountain town of Betws y Coed (meaning "prayer house in the woods") reminded me of the places in the US I used to live.  The streets were crawling with outdoor enthusiasts, the buildings seemed to be either gear shops, B & B's, eateries, or local people selling their handmade wares. Everywhere you looked the scenery was calming. I felt like I fit in. I unfortunately had little time to wander town and only passed through to my destination, race headquarters at the "ysgol". 

Once at the school I checked in and received my bag of loot. Race number, course map, Snowdonia 50 Buff, t-shirt, and a "dibber" that I'd tape to my wrist in order to check-in electronically at each checkpoint. Also a flyer for the World Masters Mountain Running Championships later this fall in Betws y Coed. One side of the flyer 100% in Welsh, pretty cool. I noticing the "masters," I reminded myself although it's tough for me to train right now it will all pay off in the future.


I went to my car and returned with my required kit to get it looked at to make sure I was carrying what the RD required. Finally I set up my tent and got situated. 

I was very happy I'd planned ahead and brought food. I happily sat in my tent enjoying a Lagunitas IPA and the odd foods I prefer: pork scratchings, avocados, hard boiled eggs, and a couple bananas. Much less stressful than trying to chase down somewhere to eat. If I ended up in a pub I'd likely drink too much anyway!

At 830pm I grabbed a seat in the school next to a guy I know from Worcester at the race briefing. Kind of nice to know someone for a change. The race director began by welcoming everyone in Welsh, then in English. He gave a brief introduction of the race course, then touched on any areas of concern and changes. Much of it was safety related pertaining to falling down old unmarked mine shafts and crossing essentially trail-less boggy moorland. Obviously all of the place names are in Welsh. A few places, one in particular Rhyd-Ddu, had a crazy pronunciation when spoken properly. When the RD mentioned it everyone in the room gave a quiet confused giggle wondering what he was talking about as the proper pronunciation sounded nothing like it looked! Finally a few "where," "what," and a proper laugh from the non-Welsh and everything was clear.

After the meeting everyone retired to their tents as it had started to rain and the invisible gnats were out in full force. Race start was at 630am with a pre-race meeting at 610am. I love the early starts! It was surprisingly quiet for a field full of tents. I had hoped for a good night's sleep but I tossed and turned until probably 2am. Race nerves? Maybe. It rained fairly hard most of the night if I recall and it was humid, I was too hot in my sleeping bag, too cold out. You'd think a kid free night, sleeping outside, and the calming pitter patter of rain would knock me out, no such luck! 

I woke up well before my alarm. The rain had stopped and it was very comfortable half in half out of my sleeping bag. I sat in my tent and ate two cold bean burritos I had made at home along with some hard boiled eggs and a banana. The glorious bean burrito! Good hot, cold, or old! So glad I rolled a few of these up before I left home! I didn't have any chores to do since I'd done it all the night before. I was tempted to put my skull and crossbones American flag on my race vest but lost motivation to do it right. Plus as much as I wish I carried a confident attitude with me, I'm the sleeper, the dark horse, hiding in the back. Flashy things aren't me. 

Everyone met up at 610am. I don't recall anything major other than reminders about "dibbing in" now to make sure your check-ins work, having your race number on the back, and the cutoff time at Llanberis and the finish. We all milled about the start. I noticed the showers that had been brought in and set up. That was surprising, maybe something to look forward to? Maybe not, as most race showers are low pressure, filthy dirty, and luke warm! Better than nothing I guess.

We all amassed at the start for a fairly informal beginning to the race. Out the school gate we went and onto the main road briefly before turning to a dirt road going up. Through old pine forest we climbed as the road turned to single track covered in slick rocks and roots, too steep to run effectively I ski walked keeping my heart rate low. I love having a nordic ski background! 

Anything that was wet you'd slip on no matter what traction you had. This would hold true for the entire race and if your shoes were wet, which they were, you'd slip on anything dry! 

I settled in with two guys making up 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place. One other guy was out front a little. We chatted as is usual in these races, both had raced last year. As the climbing leveled out the forest slowly became covered in vibrant green moss. It was like a fairy tale land bringing up thoughts of children's books. We lost the trail seemingly for a bit but fortunately the two I was with confirmed we were on track. 

Despite being a marked course much of it was marked by finger posts and not official race signage. Also some areas, such as the moorland, no true trail exists so you did need to be aware of navigation. No big deal really, you just had to pay attention. I think some people were slightly angry about this. I see it as part of the race and welcome it. 

I soon moved up with the race leader whom I would run with for much of the race. In catching up to him I noticed a few things. Firstly his fluorescent orange shirt had a ProFeet logo on it. This threw up a red flag. I had looked at the entrant list prior to leaving home for any familiar names. One guy had put "ProFeet" as his team. ProFeet is a foot motion store in London well known for ski boot and running footwear fitting. They sponsor some decent athletes. A little research and I saw on his Strava page he had some great results but hadn't been running much this summer. Either way someone to be on the lookout for. Secondly his race vest had seemingly nothing in it! I honestly don't believe he had the required kit, or he knew something I wanted to know! Third. His race number was on the front. In some races this would lead to disqualification since it's suppose to be on the back. Fourth. He had these goofy classic looking white tube socks on pulled up to his knees. Probably "fashion compression" as I'll call it! Not sure what that meant but sure stuck out. Anyway, just some initial observations weighing up the competition.

We passed through Checkpoint 1 just outside Dolwyddelan and began a long gradual dirt road climb through pine forest. The other guy told me to put my map away, as we don't need it! I tucked it into my race vest within easy reach, I know it will come in handy. I fell back to take a leak and I kept reminding myself to eat and drink early and often as it's easy to get caught up in the race excitement at the beginning and forget. Once you're in that caloric hole it's very difficult to get out. At the end of the climb and the valley we were traversing up the route left the road and followed a rugged and steep footpath straight up to boggy wet moorland. This area had been fairly heavily marked in order to get around open mine shafts that littered the area. It was slow going as it was far more efficient to walk than run considering the terrain. Moorland looks to be a field of clumpy grass but when it's crossed you soon find yourself inconsistently ankle to knee deep in water. There is really no easy way to build a solid path through it or cross it fast. Soon we began to see slate and were on solid ground again. Random shelters were built all over out of slate. Although now on a solid double track it was full of puddles. Being already soaked it was no big deal just splashing right through them. Fortunately I'm not blister prone so I was not too concerned about running in soaked footwear and socks. The Brooks PureGrit 3 I was running in was a fairly new shoe to me and far different from it's predecessor which I had very good luck with. It drained and dried very quickly which was perfect for the weather.

 After Checkpoint 2 in Blaenau Ffestiniog we were surrounded by disused slate quarries. We passed through a valley up a wet double track lined with old ruins of  buildings. I have no idea how old they were but the carefully laid black slate formed beautiful walls and arching doorways. The unsettled dreary weather, black slate, ruined buildings, some of enormous size, gave the feel of being in Mordor in Middle Earth! Pretty cool. Once up and seemingly on top of all the "ruined lands" we descended. Now my memory is foggy on this part but I believe this was the most technical descent we had (I could be confusing this descent with the one into Llanberis). It was cool rocky single track that essentially when it rained became a rocky creek. No shoes on earth would give you confidence to run down this. It was insanely slippery and difficult to even walk down. The worst part is that slate is very sharp so not only did we have to worry about breaking an ankle or wrist but severely cutting ourselves. It was a tedious and mentally draining segment. Soon it was over and on to rocky but runnable trail. Within close range of Checkpoint 3 we got off course a bit following a sheep trail versus hopping a stile over a fence. A stile is a ladder/stairs made for crossing safely over fences. Looking at the map I suggested we cut straight down to the road that we were suppose to be on. The guy I was with seemed to disagree and wanted to keep following the diminishing path. Fortunately he decided I had a better option and soon we were at the 3rd checkpoint.

In Croesor at Checkpoint 3 we mentioned that we had difficulty following the course in case it became a problem for others as well, then it could be better marked in the future if necessary. The checkpoint workers said that was the worst section and things get easier now. On we went and honestly I remember little of this section other than the final third. We hopped onto a trail going upstream of a raging river. It was beautiful. The trail had some very wet rocky sections requiring scrambling skills and even in one spot had steel handles drilled into the rock face to hang on to in order to avoid falling into the raging waters! Looking at the map it's called the Pass of Aberglaslyn. After this technical section the trail mellowed to smooth, rocky, and super fun single track. After it was over we both agreed it was a very enjoyable section to run!

We refueled at Checkpoint 4 in Beddgelert and were on our way. After a while, maybe around mile 26, we were on a rolling gravel path. I was feeling decent and was going at a fairly steady pace. Soon the guy I was running with fell back. I glanced over my shoulder and he had slowed down. Hmmm. All of a sudden a rush of positivity hit me. Is this it? Is he done? I was elated and became very emotional. I was the race leader. This race is mine! I'm tired of second and third places. I want to win today.  I mentally made the decision that I wanted this. The problem was we weren't even half way. Everyone has high and low points. I was on a high and had yet to have a bad low. He could easily be on a low and bounce back. I needed to be on top of feeding, stay positive, and focus. The "race" doesn't really even start until mile 40. I led for a while longer and indeed he caught back up, I believe around Rhyd-Ddu. I asked him if he was ok and he smugly said he thought I was going too fast. I thought to myself, bullshit! He was hurting! You never give up your weakness to the competition.

A short fight through moorland, I could see the high pass in the distance that we needed to get to in order to drop down to Llanberis. Soon we were back in a disused quarry. The piles of slate towered over us and the trail was difficult to follow despite being marked by posts. A brief moment of confusion had us wondering which way to go. The other guy suggested we go up. I looked at my map and suggested down. I was once again correct. Minutes lost yet again. We climbed out of  the quarry, the rain began again, and we ascended steep terrain up to I believe Llanberis Pass below Foel Goch. Below the pass we hit a typical rocky single track, of course littered with puddles! Down we went until we hit the roads into the popular mountain town of Llanberis and Checkpoint 5.

Checkpoint 5 was an out and back down Llanberis' high street. On our way back out people and cars were everywhere. We kept a sharp eye out for a race course marker showing us were to go. The other guy said we needed to go to a roundabout. I looked at my map and seeing we were at the end of lake we just needed to skirt the end of the water to get to the other side. "No there's the roundabout ahead." So, to the roundabout we went, and back we came to the spot I said we should go to. Minutes lost, actually 3 - 5 minutes lost! Back on course we climbed a steep and rocky gravel road made up of a few switch backs. We made it to the top and meandered through the small village of Dinorwic. Next it was into wet, trail-less, but sufficiently marked moorland. Soon we were descending to Bethesda and into Checkpoint 6.

An offering of leek and potato soup was greatly appreciated. I was quick to mix it with water in order to chug it down without burning my mouth. It's always disappointing waiting for it to cool down in order to slam it back! Some jelly beans, fill the bottles with water, some coke, more jelly beans, and we were off. Soon after leaving Bethesda at around 42 miles I decided it was time. We were power walking up an incline and during a moment of silence I noticed the other guy's breathing rate was much more labored than mine. This was the cue to go. I began running, as did he, but soon he slowly fell back. So I picked up my pace ever so slightly. I've committed to the finish, the race had now begun. As much chatting as you do through such a long race you befriend many people but from this point on they were all out to catch me and beat me to the finish. I didn't know who was coming, if the other guy would bounce back, or if I would fall apart but what I did know is that I needed to run everything from here until the finish. If second place was in sight of me and I showed weakness he may feed off it and catch up.

The gap slowly grew as I followed an easy rolling single lane road. A quick glance over my shoulder and the fluorescent orange shirt was easy to spot. I noted to myself to NEVER where high visibility clothing racing as it was now his disadvantage. I could track his every move looking back down the long valley we followed. A car rolled up to me and stopped, out the door jumped the race director excited as ever. He shouted "do you know what place you are in?" and I yelled back with a huge smile "FIRST!" "Second is maybe a quarter to half mile back!" He shouted some words of encouragement, pounded his hands on the roof of his car in excitement, then got back in and drove on. Soon the road became hilly and I decided to show no weakness and run faster up, then once out of sight power walk a bit to recover. I still had maybe 13 miles to go and needed to use caution. I kept telling myself "if you want to win you have to keep running, no more breaks." After the hills we soon popped out onto a sidewalk following a busy road. Lots of tourists and traffic. I always tend to run faster when people are around so unknowingly my pace quickened. Next through a gate and onto a dirt path pushing on and on keeping a consistent pace repeating my mantra, "if you want to win you have to keep running" despite my feet becoming sore and the remnants of past injuries beginning to flare and expose themselves. With no one in sight chasing me down mentally I reminded myself that they were there and they were coming.

I saw Checkpoint 7, the last one near the Plas y Brenin National Mountain Center and picked up my pace, scrambled through some rocky single track and made sure my "dibber" beeped as I checked in. The volunteers began to ask what I needed, I said "nothing thanks!" and took off running. I remember asking how far it was to the finish and I swear I heard "8 miles" which I think was actually "8 kilometers." My two bottles had a few sips of water in them and I still had a couple gels in my race vest but I figured with only a short distance left taking in food won't make any difference. I train fasted, without food and water, on all my runs up to 25 miles. The minutes saved could mean the difference between first and second place. However if the guy in second is hurting, like I expected, he will stop for a few minutes to rest and refuel, the time advantage will be mine.

I charged forward running relentlessly looking at the map breaking it into sections. Path to road to single track to road, then cross the river. I started to feel my lack of food and water intake and was getting dizzy. The temptation to walk was huge but I fought it and kept running. I obsessively began looking over my shoulder waiting for someone to catch up. Finally a single track leading to a steep bridge, then up a steep set of stairs, down some slippery rock. Next thing I saw was a few steps up to a rock wall, above the wall was a street sign reading "Betws y Coed". I crossed the main street, my eyes bouncing around for race arrows. I now recognized the houses surrounding the school. I ran as best I could through the neighborhood and finally into the school yard and the finish. I had just won the Snowdonia 50!

The race director congratulated me and gave me a finisher's "medal," a huge chunk of Welsh slate with the race logo on it. Then someone offered me a beer which of course I partook! I chatted about the race with a few people who approached me, spoke with the photographer who had been chasing us around all day. About ten minutes later the guy I had been running with finished in second, I congratulated him and we milled about awaiting other finishers.

Soon I was four pints deep and hardly feeling the alcohol. I decided it best to eat something and wandered into the school kitchen where they were serving up pasta bake that a local woman had made. Her husband was dishing it up. He gave me piece about the size of my head! I attempted to eat it and got about halfway. I took the rest back to my tent to eat later. 

Food! Looks like I need more beer!

Soon it was time to test out the showers I had seen earlier that morning. I wasn't sure what to expect but figured it would be better than nothing. I entered the stall and what I saw was glorious! An actual bathtub  with the shower connected to the school's water supply! The shower head was the size of a dinner plate! Forget about the race, how dirty and tired I was. This was the best shower I'd ever been in!

The evening passed by quickly and soon I crawled into my tent. The rain started. The humidity was high. And I can still hear that damn dog whining all night long! Another night of poor sleep. Oh well. I'll just have to have another shower in the morning!

I woke early and the rain had stopped. I decided to wander into town since I hadn't had a chance to yet. I followed the road, crossed the river over a stony bridge and found a trail following the river upstream to where we crossed the Miner's Bridge towards the finish. Overall a nice stretch.



I managed to get my hands on some boiling water from the kitchen for my french press and sat and enjoyed strong coffee and a bacon and egg sandwich. 1100am hit and it was time for the awards. Many people had left already but I was not about to miss out on this! I was called forward and hopped up on the first place podium. The RD awarded me a Shepard's crook made from a Welsh Mountain Ram's horn! Pretty rad award! I was bummed it was all over but what a great event!

Just need to add photos to my Snowdonia 50 write up. Maybe a day or two! Otherwise I'm back at it now. Had the Chariot out today, hopefully Wednesday too. Just trying to maintain my fitness for now.

For the past month I've ran once per week. I knew this would happen as it's nearly impossibly for me to motivate to run at night (plus the wife's "eye roll" doesn't help) and with the little one not away at day care I can't run with the Chariot. 

In a week this will change since school starts and I'll have two days per week available to take the Chariot out to the Wyre Forest. I'm hoping this will help me hold fitness for a while until my son decides to consistently sleep past 6am. For the past 4 months or longer I've been saying "he'll shift soon," which he has but not long enough or with any consistency to run in the morning. As I write this I've been anchored down with him since 430am, refusing to sleep in his crib, only on me! 

I figure if I can hold down three solid runs per week minimum I should be able to stay happy, stay fit, not get burnt out, and maybe even build a bit more on my base. Just seeing my recent performance it's obvious that consistency is the key factor. I doubted myself but everything fell into place.

The kids have been full on lately. My day begins between 430 - 6am (usually 6) and ends at 8pm. If one decides to sleep I entertain the other. There are no breaks for me. Any spare time during the day is filled with daily chores; laundry, dishes, food prep. I figure if I can keep the TV off I've done my job. 

Planning ahead I've entered the South Downs Way 100 for next June, it fills up fast. I had registered and pulled out once before so I'll try again. It's in the south of England put on by Centurion Running who put on an excellent show. I've also never been down there, it's a qualifier for many other things, and worth 4 UTMB points, oh, and of course it's on the WS100 list.  The Malvern Hills Ultra lines up perfectly with SDW100 for training (50 miles and it's local). I think I'd had this sequence planned in the past. Also with most likely a Minnesota trip planned for July I might see if I can get into one of the Afton Trail Races - 25km or 50km I think. Big might!  I'd love to revisit the Snowdonia 50 also. 

I always seem to have big plans but they are always in flux!

Any of the UTMB races are out for next year. With not running the Cotswold Century I won't have the points. Oh well, my turn will come.

Anyway, Snowdonia race report is close to being done.

Managed to get out for a run tonight. Nothing big, just an easy 4 miles. Felt alright. Quads a bit stiff, feet a bit sore. Otherwise feeling good other than the normal complaints. I'm working on a race report, hoping for more photos to show up online to refresh my memory!

Pre-race


Pretend this is dated last Thursday! I forgot to post it, it's also unfinished but now it really doesn't matter! 

I've ran twice in the past ten days. I guess that means I've been tapering for Snowdonia 50! Honestly I probably needed it. At least I know I won't be going into it over trained! 

I'm excited. It should be a cool run whether I end up being a Competer or just a Completer! 

I need to look at all this hard work that seems is for nothing as what it truly is: base building for the future. I may not have the ideal training schedule I want now but if I can overcome this time now while increasing my fitness under stress and poor conditions I can only hope it will pay off. 

Patience. Positivity. My time will come. 

All geared up for the race. The kit list is the same as Lakeland 100 so I'll have pretty much exactly what I had before with a tad less food, lower powered headlamp, and since it looks to be raining maybe a long sleeve. 

Hoping to head out about 4pm Friday. Race start is Saturday at 630am. 58 miles, 8000 vertical feet.

I've accepted my situation. Snowdonia is a go even if I'm a "completer and not a competer". I think Cotswold Century is off. I really don't need it for any lottery or prerequisite so I may as well skip it. 

I've been hardly running at all but in the grand scheme of things I'm essentially tapering for Snowdonia I guess? Nothing I do now will help me in the race. 

The little dude is shifting his sleep schedule finally. Today he slept until 7! So it's happening. 

I just need to be patient.

And like that motivation is lost. I didn't run at all Sunday. It's fucking impossible to clock decent miles currently in my life. 

I seem to set a high standard for myself. I know how fast I can be. I know I can do well in these races. If I have the time to train and recover properly, but as I mentioned the reality is I'm 38, married, two kids under 4. That time is extremely limited. 

Running is a very selfish activity and I try my best to work around my family which when my mornings are available is perfect. I'll bang out twenty miles before anyone is even awake. Perfect. No one even knows I've been gone. I currently don't have that luxury and it's just not working. 

I think I need to buck up, accept the reality, and just do what I can and be happy. Easier said than done. That means no Cotswold Century 100 (I've yet to register anyway). I'll run Snowdonia 50 in two weeks and try not to get too down on myself if I have a poor race. Who knows? It could actually go well. Then maybe run Beacons Ultra (46 miles) in November just because I'm registered and I hate to throw out the money. 

Snowdonia will get me in the lottery for CCC (Courmayeur - Champex - Chamonix), essentially a smaller version of UTMB in France/Italy which will qualify me for th Western States 100 lottery in 2017. So at least I'm on track still. 

I don't know. So many thoughts going through my head with this.

I get so frustrated with myself sometimes in training for these races when the reality  is I'm 38, married, with kids. I do not have the required time to train properly to perform at the level I'd like however I think I can make it work. 

I can't. I can't and won't be able to until I get the morning back and a consistent sleep pattern. 

I work so hard to keep up this routine and then every few weeks it all crashes down. Consistency is lost. I'm exhausted from lack of sleep, forgetting to eat, or lack of time. I feel like I am able to carve out time, it's there, but when the motivation is weak that time is lost. 

I'm mulling all this over while trying to wake up at 2 o'clock in the afternoon in anticipation of a 20 - 25 mile run tonight after everyone is asleep. 25 miles is wishful thinking but with only running twice this week so far (16 and 6!) it really needs to be done. I'm not sure if I have it in me though. 

Two weeks until Snowdonia 50 so a bit early to taper since the past couple weeks have been shit but maybe it's the way it will be. 

Better rested than overtrained right? 

Got to go play Play Doh.

The Sunday night long run happened and it seemed to be a good thing. I did my Arley - Severn Way loop (16+) and then made up the final few miles around town. It was late when I finished. A good thing. I struggled with the last two miles. A good thing. So I'd assume the effort was just right. With the sleep deprivation and lack of food/water I'd categorize this run as a bonk run. I needed these things bad the final miles! 

It was dark early so I'm glad I had my big 'ol Petzl Nao headlamp. Motivation was tough as always but mentally overcoming this and the discomfort of the bonk can only be a good thing. 

I didn't take any photos. It was a dull night and darkness fell early it seemed. 

Monday I did get out to ride mountain bikes and as expected it was super fun as always. Riding with my co-worker at Cannock Chase was great. Finally was with someone who could ride the entire XC loop. Had a look at all the "black" (most difficult) graded sections but only rode a few of them. Since I ride maybe once a year my confidence wasn't as high as normal. Most of these were rock gardens with minor drop offs. The rest of the riding was fun single track. The craziest thing is seeing trails rated for difficulty, it really puts the trails I cut my teeth on into perspective! Essentially 75% of the riding in the southwestern US would be graded "black"! 

It was also nice to actually get a workout in. Other times I've been out with "weekend warriors" and although still fun, it's not really exercise, more of a noodle around.

Monday JKD I was worthless. The little dude hadn't slept well in a few nights, add in a nighttime 20 miler, mountain biking, and I was cooked. Just couldn't focus. 

Knocked out 16 miles with the little dude on Wednesday at the Wyre Forest. He puked up his breakfast due to a hidden burp before we left so I wasn't expecting much. However he had some milk around mile 11 and was good to go. I like to see it as he needed to hit up the aid station! 

Actually a nice break. I rarely am able to just sit and be outside. Or maybe I just don't make it priority to, I'm always on the go. Reminds me of the Colin Fletcher quote, something to the tune of "sitting on a mountaintop thinking about sitting on a mountaintop thinking about nothing at all". I always liked that idea and now married with kids those precious opportunities I used to live have been replaced! 

The Chariot will be hung up for a while as my daughter will be at home for three weeks. Her daycare gig is on hold for a bit over the school break. Training is and becomes more difficult now. As I've mentioned before those Chariot runs seemed to be very effective. The way I see it if I can at least get in three runs of 11 - 20+ miles each week I think I should be good. Although "junk miles" are important, time on my feet is what I need. 

With Snowdonia in three weeks focus on two more 20+ runs and anything else hills, then taper the week before the race. Depending on how I recover from the 58 hilly and possibly technical miles one more 20 before Cotswold? Otherwise just try to be consistent. Consistency has been tough, I had been doing great but then fell back a bit but still keeping the focus on long runs. 

Anyway...... I'm rambling on now. I keep comparing now with my pre-Superior 100 training and I'm doing ok. I can't get my calisthenics habit to stick. I'm not as consistent, but I've got more long runs. I do what I can.
